Sugarpie & the Candymen
Let it swing!
Sugarpie & the Candymen were born in 2008 from the meeting of five musicians from Piacenza and Cremona, who put together their common passion for swing, gipsy jazz, blues, soul, pop and vocals armonies to create a band: the challenge was to mix in an orginal way all these genres.
The quintet is now composed by the signer Miss "Sugarpie" Georgia Ciavatta and her Candymen: Jacopo Delfini (gipsy guitar and vocal armonies), Renato Podestà (guitar, banjo and vocal armonies), Roberto Lupo (drums) and Claudio Ottaviano (double bass).
Immediately the group was their first commitment at full time and it began an intense activity of live performances with hundreds of concerts in the principal jazz clubs in Italy and Europe. In this period, the particular sound and the repertory of the group were elaborated and stablished: their musical kaleidoscope puts side by side Led Zeppelin with Django Reinhardt, the Beatles with Bessie Smith, Van Halen with Benny Goodman, Guns & Roses with Ray Charles, Queen with Peggy Lee and many others, winning the challenge that was previously determined by the group.
Since 2010, the band is in progressive evolution and it proposes original songs too, in italian and in english, in its own style. Since then they began to perform on prestigious stages of all Europe musical festivals, besides a brief tour in USA.
In summer 2011, the group joined the Ascona Jazz Festival and it won the possibility to perform again on that stage for the next year thanks to audience's will. Three albums were published for Irma Records, the first "Sugarpie and the Candymen" in 2009, the second "Swin'n'Roll" in 2011 and the third "Waiting for the one" in 2014. Some of the songs of these albums were launched as singles and promoted on the most important national radios in Italy (RadioRAI1 and RadioRAI2) and in Switzerland (RSI 1, 2, and 3). In December 2011, they performed live in Caterpillar, historical radio program on RadioRai2.
To develop the sound, during the years the group had the opportunity to cooperate in tour and in studio with various brilliant italian and american musicians, such as: Michael Supnick, Dean Zucchero, Paolo Tomelleri, Rudy Migliardi, Gregory Agid, Davide Ghidoni, Gianni di Benedetto and Mattia Cigalini.
In summer 2014, the group met the Master Renzo Arbore at the Ascona Jazz Festival. So a fruitful artistic parterniship began between them which took Sugarpie and the Candymen on the stage of Christmas Concert in Vaticano (Rai2, December 2014), at Cremona Jazz Festival (April 2015) and at the radio program Rock Files, hosted by Ezio Guaitamacchi (LifeGate, January 2015).
In July 2015, the band was invited to Umbria Jazz festival and it performed in 20 concerts on Giardini Carducci's stage in Perugia. The 12th of July, in IV Novembre square in Perugia, which was full of people, it joined a special episode of the program Webnotte (July 2015) and it had the opportunity to share again the stage with Renzo Arbore and, in surprise, with Stefano Bollani. During the same summer, they performed at Piano&Jazz festival in Ischia (August 2015) and they took part in the Umbria Jazz Winter event (Orvieto 30th of December 2015 - 3rd of January 2016). In 2015, for EXPO in Milan, the group had the opportunity to perform for Nutella, Varvello Farine and for the city of Piacenza.
In October/November 2015, the band took part to two prestigious radio programs such as Webnotte, hosted by Ernesto Assante and Gino Castaldo, and Radio2 Social Club, hosted by Luca Barbarossa, to present as a preview their 4th album "Let it swing", tribute to the Beatles, in a progressive swing key. The 6th of November 2015, "Let it swing" went out, from which "Come together" launched as first single in rotation on several national radios.
