Ball Percussion
Ball Percussion in duo
BALL PERCUSSION is a project, born in Florence in 2013, the result of an artistic research aimed at combining body percussion and manipulation of unconventional objects, bringing to the stage choreographies expressed through the movements of the body and objects, playing simultaneously rhythmic sequences with body percussion.
An excerpt from the latest production, performed as a duo, will be staged for the festival.
Underlying this is the concept of searching for points of contact and interactions between Gravity and Time: Gravity to be understood as the foundation that governs the manipulation of objects in space (pattern) and determines a creative ground for Rhythm that can be expressed within it, using body percussion as a musical element. The interchangeability between the two factors lies at the foundation of the creation, where starting from a basic Rhythm (Groove) we go on to explore the possible routines that juggling allows, in relation to the flow of Time. We made use of bodily percussion as the most suitable expressive element, thus allowing to create rhythm using one's body, but also to express it in movement while keeping juggling and the aesthetics it expresses possible.
Juggling carries within it fundamentals that are common in nature with Rhythm, and from the study of manipulation patterns, siteswaps, it was possible to find an interesting comparison between numbers in juggling and numbers in music (subdivisions of the pulse, number sequences, Rhythm Blocks), to be used as further tools for in-depth study and creation.
The Rhythm-Juggling combination has led from the origins of creation to the present day to the development of a very in-depth code and performance technique, expressed on stage by the simultaneous fusion of the two arts, through rhythmic sequences of Body Percussion and musical juggling and clown routines.
Important role in the choice of rhythms was determined by non-European musical cultures, particularly the Tabla of North India and the polyrhythms of West Africa, precisely because they offer very rich repertoires of creative stimulation.
