Circo El Grito

EL GRITO was founded in Brussels in 2007 by the meeting of Uruguayan aerial acrobat Fabiana Ruiz Diaz and Italian multidisciplinary artist Giacomo Costantini. Considered by the press to be among the pioneers of contemporary circus in Italy, the company presents shows that move on the borderline between circus, dance, music, theater and literature. From the International Circus Biennial in Brussels to the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, El Grito has spread its shows throughout Europe declining contemporary circus in its three symbolic places: the street, the theater, and the chapiteau. El Grito is recognized by the Ministry of Culture and the Marche Region as a project of Primary Regional Interest.

The show UOMO CALAMITA (Magnet Man) conceived by Giacomo Costantini with the collaboration of Wu Ming 2 took as its working model the dialogue between the process of creating a circus drama and the construction of the narrative subject of a historical novel. The two authors confronted each other in a second exchange that lasted two years: if Costantini was able to lean on the historical and narrative insights of the book under construction, Wu Ming 2 saw the universe he was writing materialize in circus gesture. Before the scripting of the show was completed, composer and drummer Fabrizio Baioni "Cirro" was involved: in Uomo Calamita the music is entirely performed live and, like circus and literature, was an integral part of the show's creation process.

Magnet Man – Synopsis
On Sept. 11, 1940, in a telegraphic circular, the police chief orders that all bandwagons, circuses and caravans be checked so that they "be rounded up and concentrated under strict supervision." The Magnet Man and other freaks thus find themselves tentless, jobless and wanted by the police. To escape persecution, the circus people are forced to go into hiding, and they will use their powers, cunning and magnetism to fight Nazi-fascism.

Magnet Man story was inspired by those Sinti and Roma who took part in actions of several partisan brigades, formed at least one and fell in massacres and reprisals. During the day they performed shows, at night they carried out sabotage actions against the Nazi-Fascists.
