Balletto Civile

Balletto Civile is characterized by its search for a "total" scenic language by privileging the interaction between theater, dance and original live singing. The company has received several awards for its work including the ANCT Prize, Premio Internazionale Roma Danza, Premio Hystrio Corpo a Corpo, Premio Danza&Danza and Premio Rete Critica. Balletto Civile fully espouses the Festival's urgency to propose an idea of popular theater and deep local involvement and to stimulate true creative intelligence in repurposing its works into site-specific situations.
Elizabeth I
A three-round boxing match to tell the story of Queen Elizabeth I from a fresh and unusual perspective. The performance does not aim to reconstruct Elizabeth’s biography, but rather to capture the deeper meaning of her revolutionary actions—a study of her inner life, willpower, sense of responsibility, and relationship with power.
Elizabeth appears as a true fighter, occupying the stage/ring alongside her coach.
The core idea of the show is built around the athlete-coach relationship. The heart of Elizabeth’s struggle always revolved around her identity as a woman who, by a twist of fate, found herself holding a power that no man would have ever legitimized for her—and for which she paid a high price.
Taking a stand: this is what inspired my research—taking a stand and assuming the responsibility that comes with it.
We live in a time where finding a place, becoming someone, being recognized is at the heart of how we shape our identity; yet the desperate search for this legitimacy risks crushing our true nature.
Training is staying faithful to who we are—prepared, yet never fully ready—to take on responsibility, trained to handle even what we cannot choose.
The fiercest battle we will ever fight is with ourselves, with the honesty we owe our own nature, which will always rebel if we try to bend it into something else.
To fight in order to choose, to be true to oneself—whatever that may be—as long as it’s real.
A fight of the self against the self.
