Joan Català Carrasco was born in Barcelona in 1978. From the beginning, he has been drawn—with both concern and curiosity—to the plastic arts and movement, where the body and/or objects become the communicators.
Always connected to sports and fascinated by the visual arts and the concept of movement as a form of communication, in 1994 he began his training in the plastic arts at La Llotja, School of Applied Arts and Artistic Crafts. From 1999 to 2005, he attended several circus schools—including Carampa in Madrid, Rogelio Rivel in Barcelona, and the National Circus School in Moscow—specializing in acrobatic balance work (hand-to-hand). Alongside this, he pursued training in contemporary dance, physical theatre, and clowning, studying with several international pedagogues such as María Muñoz and Pep Ramis (Malpelo), Michel Dallaire, Iñaki Azpillaga, Àngels Margarit, Thomas Hauert, David Zambrano, among others.
Since 2005, he has performed in theatres and festivals around the world with companies such as Daraomai, Circus Klezmer, Los 2Play, and Cia. In 2012, he began developing his distinctive vision of performing arts designed for the street and urban landscapes with the show *Pelat*, which premiered at the FiraTàrrega in 2013 and continues to tour internationally into the 2024 season. In 2016, *Menar* premiered at FiraTàrrega: his second work created for the street and urban spaces, a duet created together with Roser Tutusaus.
In 2021, he debuted the project *5.100 m/s*. In 2023, he premiered his second solo performance in public spaces, *IDIÒFONA*, where Joan envisions the performance as a space for dialogue between humans, objects, and the environment—where play and labor are driven by the tools, experiences, and ideas each person brings.
Idiòfona is to make light of tougness, to find harmony amidst noise, and to build a common vibration. It is an ode to the pleasure of shared experience. Idiòfona is a dialogue between man and matter during which a large sound installation is built in public space with the participation of the public. Unless you are musicians or have studied this subject, you may not know what an idiophone is. Idiophones are musical instruments that produce sound from vibration, but not from the vibrations of the strings, but from the whole body and matter of the object. Based on this concept, and with the intention of putting together the ideas of community, material and space, Joan Català brings a proposal that invites a group of randomly chosen spectators to realize once in hand. Idiophone, it is the metal-poetic odyssey of a character with a marked iron destiny. A born search engine fleeing from an imposed path. Idiòfona is his betrayal of tradition, in order to forge a new one. His.
