Established in 2008 in Vientiane, Khao Niew Lao Theater is directed by Lattanakone Insisiengmay and is the only contemporary arts company producing theatrical performances in Laos. It is composed of Lao artists mainly from Vientiane National Circus and Kabong Lao Puppet Theater, specializing in puppetry, shadow and mime. The group offers its audiences, both adult and young, a mix of creative, poetic and social messages through a contemporary and ingenious use of tools that the people of Laos know well.
Khao Niew has collaborated with nonprofits in Laos to create performances, educational projects, and events to promote the skills and appreciation of traditional art in the Lao People's Republic, sharing Lao culture with the younger generation, local families, but also overseas guests.

The company has created several theater shows, including Khoonlu Nangoua in 2012 and Cycle of life in 2014, and produced several puppetry shows entitled Elephant song, Broken Dream, What, 4 Seasons and Pinocchio.
Khao Niew has been fortunate to participate in numerous international perfomative arts festivals in many countries such as France, Portugal, Switzerland, Japan, Korea, Singapore, the Philippines, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. These experiences have broadened their horizons and created a network of meaningful relationships with international artists.

Elephant Song
In the past, Laos was called the land of millions of elephants. Always a symbol of the country and the Lao community, the elephant is the largest and most powerful animal and has lived with the Lao community, but now its numbers are much reduced. In Elephant Song, the company aims to tell the identity and spirit of Laos through the contemporary portrayal of traditional stories, transformed into a fascinating work of puppetry through the ingenious use of local Laotian tools and objects.
