La vertigine del desiderio is the work in progress of Giacomo Costantini’s new solo performance. An intimate and ambitious piece that blends circus, theatre, and magic to explore the human nature of desire.
Desire is a paradox: it resides in our deepest intimacy, yet it is also an alien force that does not entirely belong to us and that we cannot fully control. We do not choose it; it is desire that passes through us and transcends us. It is a force within us and, at the same time, a drive that pushes us beyond ourselves, toward an elsewhere that may be both wonderful and terrifying.

Giacomo Costantini is a multidisciplinary performer, director, and playwright, considered one of the pioneers of contemporary circus in Italy. Since the 1990s, he has pursued a line of research focused on the synthesis of circus and music. He is the artistic director of Circo El Grito, founded in 2008 with Fabiana Ruiz Diaz: “One of the most imaginative companies — not French, but Italian” (CdS).
He created the performances Scratch and Stretch, 20 Decibel, Johann Sebastian Circus, and Uomo Calamita 1945. For the Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini, he wrote and directed the opera-circus productions Caffè Bach and Gran Circo Rossini.
At the end of the 1990s, he began researching the synthesis of different artistic fields, particularly circus, theatre, and music. This led him to Brussels, where he worked on contemporary circus dramaturgy, signed various multidisciplinary projects, and served as artistic director for prestigious international festivals. Giacomo experiments with a new, contemporary, and widely accessible language. He uses a personal creative methodology born from the meeting between his circus experience and his studies in the Theory of Closed Articular Complex Systems.
In this first solo work, he investigates the theme of desire, approaching it in its complexity, its syncretism, its symbolism, and its social role.
